Background: Healthcare practice is fundamentally changing with automation and technologies revolutionising the industry. As clinical leaders are racing out of the 4th industrial revolution (4IR) and still coming to grips with monumental technological changes impacting their roles, they face additional challenges at the cusp of the fifth industrial revolution (5IR), where they must lead the changing world of humans and intelligent machines, working together in complex healthcare environments.

5IR leaders need human-centric skills and competencies for responsible leadership that help manage technology in supporting and empowering, rather than replacing, the healthcare workforce. 5IR leaders must use innovative and sustainable approaches that consider environmental and social impacts. Current clinical leadership frameworks do not necessarily include competencies on social responsibility, sustainability and innovation, leaving clinical leaders challenged in 5IR environments.

Aims: This research aims to investigate clinical leadership frameworks that contribute to leadership preparedness for social responsibility, sustainability and innovation in 5IR, using a scoping review to identify gaps in needed competency domains.

Methodology and Results: A preliminary rapid review demonstrated a dearth of these competency domains across frameworks. A scoping review is being conducted involving PubMed, Academic Search Complete and CINAHL. Studies identified through reference lists of selected studies, and grey literature are also being considered. Narrative synthesis will accompany results.

Conclusions, Originality and Implications: This novel research will highlight contemporary, clinical leadership frameworks that empower socially responsible and innovative leadership, and prepare clinical leaders for healthcare that is facing unprecedented challenges, disruption, and societal upheavals.
