For Supervisors and Preceptors – If you have a new candidate joining in 2025, this is for you!

From 2025 and the RACMA FTP 2025 will have a raft of changes that will require a new set of skills, and understanding of process on the part of the supervisors and preceptors. This workshop will explore various aspects of the renewed Training Program, and the changes to the Supervisor’s role. It will emphasise the use of Feedback and Reflective Practice, and describe ways in which the new 360 tool will work, and the role of the supervisors and preceptors in that process. The contents of the workshop will benefit ALL supervisors and preceptors – whether or not they have a new candidate. The session is a combination of presentations, discussion and interactive activities. We have over 150 slots available, to enable all interested to attend.

Candidate Workshop | Conflict Competence – Leading and Managing in the Messy Real World of Rural Health

10:30am – 5:00pm

No Charge

Onsite Attendees Only

Andrew Johnson

Candidates only.

The Challenge
In healthcare, our reality is that conflict is ever-present, even in High Functioning Teams. Mostly conflict does not manifest in outright warfare, it may just simmer in the background, or indeed be a source of inspiration and progress. Not all conflict is bad, we need to understand it, and work out how to use it constructively, rather than engage in a futile exercise to resolve or eliminate it. And we need to know how to prevent or manage destructive escalation.

In healthcare, we now know that escalated conflict and incivility not only erode our team performance and our enjoyment of work but can have profound impact on patient safety and clinical outcomes. Cohesion is critical to safe care, conflict competence is how we get there.

The Opportunity
This interactive workshop will explore and deepen understanding of conflict, where it comes from, how it is expressed and how it can be addressed. Exploring the dynamics of conflict, we will discuss how things can escalate out of control and what to do when that happens.

Negotiation is one of the most common of human activities and yet we are taught very little about how it works and how we can get better at it. We will explore the art of negotiation and develop a better understanding of our own styles and how to flex our style to match the situation at hand. We will explore the concept of Interest-Based negotiation, approaches to negotiation that create value, rather than just distribute value. That is, we will learn how to “increase the size of the pie” rather than share the pie on the basis of “more for you is less for me”.

You will walk away with a better understanding of yourself, how you interact with others, and how you can improve those interactions, and help others to improve theirs.

Our focus will be on your real world, with a program tailored to the needs to the health leader. We will talk about the challenges of working in teams, the dynamics of health communities, dealing with the revolving doors of leaders, and with the entrenched personalities.

The Program
The program will include:

  • Basic conflict theory
  • Analysis of conflict situations
  • Negotiation styles self-assessment
  • Introduction to negotiation skills
  • Conflict interventions
  • Navigating conflict to generate cohesion

Your Facilitator
Andrew Johnson is known to many in Queensland Health from his 22 years in Townsville HHS, 20 of those as EDMS before moving into a bespoke Medical Leadership Development role.

Through those years, Andrew made most of the mistakes there are to make, and then had to fix his own mess, so learnt a thing or two along the way. Perhaps unsurprisingly, his work drove him to developing a better understanding of conflict, and how to generate more cohesion in the system. In 2022, Andrew completed a Masters of Conflict Management and Resolution and is now a certified conflict coach and mediator.

After leaving Townsville in 2022, Andrew moved to Brisbane, working extensively with Defence, running a leadership development program for Metro North, and has set up a private consulting practice Resilient Healthcare Solutions. He has recently been appointed as Principal Consultant to the Surgeon General of the Australian Defence Force in the domain of Force Health Protection and promoted to the rank of Air Commodore… his fanciest title yet.
